The Los Angeles Police Department (officially the City of Los Angeles Police Department), commonly referred to as the LAPD, is the third-largest police department after the New York Police Department and Chicago Police Department, and is responsible for law and order in Los Angeles, California with over 9000 uniformed personnel and over 3000 civilian employees. The Los Angeles Police Force first came to be in 1853 and was then known as the Los Angeles Rangers, a force that assisted the LA County forces on a voluntary basis.
